Optimizing the spaces in your home for life at home - Part 3 (Gym)

5 spaces in your home and how to optimize them for life at home

Home Gym/ Workout Space

This is the most unlikely defined space in homes, but if the threat of pandemics becomes commonplace or we happen to spend more of our lives at home, this needs to become an essential and regular space we create in our homes. I had a workout streak of 1051 days at the time of this writing, yet I hadn’t been to a traditional gym in over six years.

Due to space constraints, creating a dedicated space for working out is only possible for some homes. In an ideal world, one would have a room with wall mirrors and all workout equipment laid out and ready to be hopped on. However, if you live in an apartment with limited space like me, think of your ‘workout space’ as a flex area where you lay your workout equipment during ‘gym time’ and stow away the equipment after completing your workout.

The photo below is my front entryway, which I use as my daily workout space. I move my incline bench from storage and roll out my workout mat here every morning.

Home workout space

Just to let you know, the only rule here is to maintain a consistent location for your home workout space. Your mind and body need to become aware that this area is for getting buff.

Home Gym starter pack:

  1. Workout/yoga mat

  2. Weights - Kettlebells and Dumbbells

  3. Incline bench (Marcy Multi-purpose Adjustable Utility Bench for Full Body Workout SB-228)

  4. Pull up bar

  5. Any HIIT workout App

  6. Body Scale

  7. Jump Rope

  8. Resistance Bands

Roll out your mat and jump right into those HIIT workouts. I use the Seven workout app (7 minutes per session) and typically do 2 - 6 rounds a day. One can also add weights to any Seven workout to make it more challenging.

It helps to interchange between the mat and an incline bench. An incline bench is an all-in-one gym equipment that lets you perform various fitness exercises to tone and strengthen your core, chest, arms, legs, and thighs. With consistency, this simple home gym setup is more than enough for those with basic fitness goals to lose weight and get fit/toned. One must supplement this with additional weights or time in traditional gyms if their goals are bodybuilding/fitness championships.
